For those new to twitter, and who are still asking the question, "why should I use Twitter?" read what Howard Rheingold writes in his article, Twitter Literacy.
Interesting read! I signed up for twitter some time ago but have not really used it much as I had been trying to use to follow people I knew already. I'm just now starting to explore using it as a professional tool. From reading what you have posted here I think I will continue to mess around with it :).
Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as the "SMS of the Internet" since the use of Twitters application programming interface for sending and receiving short text messages by other applications often eclipses the direct use of Twitter.

I never thought of Twitter as a literacy activity, but after reading your article I can see how it could be very useful in my classroom! Thanks!
